What does a garden gate cost to supply and fit?
The gate is often the cheap part. Posts, hardware and getting it hung square are where the work is.
A single side gate into existing sound posts is a short job. A pair of driveway gates is a different scale entirely, because the posts have to carry real weight, stay plumb for years and swing on hardware that will not sag. Between those two extremes, cost is set by four things: the size and weight of the gate, what it is made from, what the posts are and how they are set, and the quality of the ironmongery.
What you are paying for
From a simple side gate up to a driveway pair.
- Gate size and weight: a tall, close boarded driveway gate weighs many times what a side gate does.
- Posts: timber, concrete or steel, and whether they are set in concrete with proper depth.
- Hardware: hinges, latch, drop bolt, slam plate and lock. Cheap hardware is the most common cause of a sagging gate.
- Made to measure vs off the shelf: bespoke suits non standard openings and uneven ground.
- Ground and levels: a driveway that falls away changes how the gate has to be hung and how much ground clearance it needs.
- Removal of the old gate and posts, including digging out old concrete.
Why gates sag, and how to avoid it
A gate that drops is almost always a post problem or a hinge problem, not a gate problem. Posts that are not set deep enough, or hinges that are undersized for the leaf, will let a heavy gate pull forward within a season or two.
Bracing matters too. On a braced timber gate the diagonal should run from the bottom hinge corner upwards, so it works in compression. Fitted the other way it does very little.
Side gates, driveway gates and security
A side gate is mostly about access and keeping the garden closed off, so height, a good latch and a lockable bolt matter most.
Driveway gates are heavier, more visible from the street and often the first thing a visitor sees, so the finish and the way they meet in the middle are worth spending on. Drop bolts into a ground socket keep a pair steady when closed.
Getting a gate quote that compares
Check whether the price includes the posts, setting them in concrete, all ironmongery, removal of the old gate and any treatment or painting. Those five items are where quotes diverge, and once they are equalised the totals usually sit far closer together.
