Bathroom doors that warp, swell or stop latching
One-sided moisture is the fastest way to bow a door leaf.
A door with a warm dry hallway on one side and a steamy bathroom on the other is being asked to hold still while its two faces behave completely differently. Add unsealed top and bottom edges — which is how most doors are hung — and the leaf takes on moisture at the end grain, expands unevenly and bows. It shows first as a latch that needs a push, then as a visible gap at the top or bottom corner.
Why it bows rather than just swelling
Timber and engineered cores move with moisture content. If one face is sealed with several coats and the other has one thin coat, or if the top and bottom edges are bare, the two sides reach different moisture levels and the leaf curves toward the drier face.
The three details that prevent it
Most warping is preventable at the point the door is hung.
- Seal every face — including the top edge, the bottom edge and any cut-outs for hinges and latches.
- Balance the finish: the same number of coats on both faces.
- Give the room somewhere for the moisture to go — extraction that actually runs long enough after use.
Can a bowed door be straightened?
Sometimes, on solid timber, with controlled weighting over time — but it is unreliable and usually returns. On a hollow-core or engineered leaf, no. The practical route is a replacement leaf, properly sealed on all six faces before hanging.
What to specify for a wet room or bathroom
A heavier, more stable leaf, sealed all round, with hinges sized for the weight and a latch set with enough throw to cope with small seasonal movement. If the room is a shower room in constant use, moisture-resistant cores are worth the difference.
