What actually drives the cost of a media wall

Two media walls the same size can differ enormously. Here's where the difference sits.

Finished media wall with recessed television, electric fire and lit shelving

People often ask for a price per metre for a media wall, and it is the one measurement that tells you least. The build behind the face — how services are run, what the wall is made of, whether there is a fireplace and what type, how much storage is concealed, and how the finish is achieved — is what determines the work involved. Understanding those variables lets you shape the spec to the budget rather than the other way round.

The existing wall you're building against

A flat stud wall is the simplest starting point. A chimney breast with alcoves either side means three planes to work to, and a solid masonry wall changes how everything is fixed and how services are chased or routed.

The fireplace decision

An electric insert needs a correctly sized recess, ventilation to the manufacturer's requirement, a heat-appropriate surround and a power supply in the right place. Choosing the unit early matters, because the recess is built around its specific dimensions — changing model later means rebuilding the aperture.

Electrics and cable management

Concealing power, HDMI, aerial and network behind the wall is what makes a media wall look finished. The number of outlets, whether new circuits are required, and whether an electrician is needed for the connections all affect scope. Building in generous conduit is cheap now and invaluable later.

Storage, lighting and the finish

Open recesses are quick. Doors, drawers, soft-close hardware, adjustable shelving, integrated LED with a driver location and a switch position — each adds fabrication and fitting time. So does the finish: a spray-quality painted surface takes considerably more preparation than a brushed one.

How to control the budget

Fix the fireplace model and TV size early, keep the geometry simple, put the money into the finish rather than the number of compartments, and build in more cable capacity than you think you need.
