Under-stair storage: what fits, and what actually works
The space is a triangle. The trick is choosing which part of it you can genuinely reach.
Every under-stair space has the same problem: the useful volume is at the tall end and the useless volume is at the toe. Cupboards with a single door leave you crawling into the dark to reach anything at the back. The solutions that work are the ones that bring the contents out to you, or that accept the geometry and use each zone for something suited to its height.
Pull-out drawers on runners
The most effective solution for a deep space: large drawers running the depth of the stair pull the contents to you instead of you going in. They need robust runners rated for the load and a carcass square enough to keep them running smoothly for years.
Zoned cupboards with separate doors
Dividing the run into two or three separately accessed compartments — tall end for coats and a vacuum, middle for shoes and boxes, low end for shallow items — is simpler than drawers and avoids one enormous unreachable cavity.
Seating and boot rooms
In a hallway with room, a bench with hanging above and shoe storage below turns dead space into the part of the house that gets used every single day. It suits family entrances far better than closed cupboards.
Constraints worth knowing early
Meter boxes, consumer units and stopcocks under the stairs must stay accessible. If a WC or a habitable use is being considered, fire separation and escape requirements come into play — that changes the job from joinery into a regulated alteration and should be checked before design.
